WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder

Sleep apnea is an involuntary pause in breathing that occurs while the patient is asleep.

In most cases the sleeper is unaware of these breath stoppages because they don’t trigger a full awakening. The involuntary pause in breathing can result either from a blocked airway or a signaling problem in the brain. There are three types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central, and mixed. Of the three, obstructive sleep apnea, often called OSA for short, is the most common.  Most people with the condition have the first kind, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Sleep apnea due to a signaling problem is known as central sleep apnea (CSA).
SYMPTOMS INCLUDE
-Chronic snoring -Sleep deprived -Depression -Irritability -Sexual dysfunction -Daytime sleepiness
Untreated, Sleep Disorders can increase your risk for

high blood pressure, heart disease and heart attack, stroke, and fatigue-related motor vehicle and work accidents.

Sleep Apnea Diagnosis

One of the most common methods used to diagnose sleep apnea is a sleep study, which may require an overnight stay at a sleep center. The sleep study monitors a variety of functions during sleep including sleep state, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rate, respiratory effort, airflow, and blood oxygen levels. This test is used both to diagnose sleep apnea and to determine its severity.
